Cheats are present since the beginning of Age of Empires, in all its versions it has always been very simple to use them and it has always been fun to test the most complete craziness on medieval maps.
Some cheats served to provide you with features or to facilitate the game, but in some cases create memes. Like the eternal Cobra car in Age of Empires 2.
The cheat codes appeared in the first versions of the game and were used by devs as a quick way to test what they developed. But it was something that ended up in the final version and was thought as something that wouldn’t impact players, since it could only be used in single-player campaigns.
That’s how the legend of cheats were born, and soon players discovered how it was possible to open a console that allowed to add codes and when pressing enter it would perform the effect of the code.
But where are the Age of Empires 4 cheats? or what are the Age of Empires 4 cheat codes?
Where are the Age of Empires 4 cheats?
You won’t find any official cheats for AoE 4, as none of them made it to the final version. This information has been confirmed by Adam Isgreen, Creative Director of Age of Empires.
But there are unofficial codes, see further down in the guide.
However, He explained that the development team already has a list of commands in mind. And that may be added in the future through a patch or update.
Cheats are coming post-launch as well since that’s kind of a classic Age thing. And we haven’t talked about that before, so there you go.
However, Isgreen did not explain when the next updates or expansions will be released. So it’s almost impossible to confirm when it would be possible to start cheating in Age of Empires 4.

Unofficial Cheats
Although there is no official way to use cheats, several people have already figured out how to open the Age of Empires 4 command console.
It is worth noting that many of these codes are still undergoing development and testing, so be careful when using.
Steps:
- Extract the dev folder from the downloaded ZIP linked below into: C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonAge of Empires IV
- It should end up looking like Age of Empires IVdev*.lua
- In steam right click Age of Empires IV and click on Properties
- Add the launch option: -dev
- In game press CTRL+SHIFT+ ~ (The key above tab on a US keyboard)
- Paste in this text (Ctrl+V): dofile(‘dev/cheatmenu.lua’)
- Hit enter
- Then press CTRL+SHIFT+ ~ again
